The development history of energy storage lithium-ion batteries and their status in data centers

by:Vglory      2021-04-29
For a long time, energy storage batteries have been an important bottleneck for all IT equipment, because the energy density of batteries is the same as the Moore's law of chips, and it is difficult to double under normal circumstances. In the data center, we use a large number of maintenance-free lead-acid batteries as backup energy storage for UPS, as the last line of defense for power supply in the data center. The safety of all loads depends on the reliability of the battery. However, in practical applications, we have found that more than 30% of data center load losses are caused by battery failures. Since the Frenchman Plante invented the lead-acid battery in 1859, the development of lead-acid battery technology has been very slow, with almost no major breakthroughs. For all data center managers, lead-acid batteries are a painful but unavoidable fact. The requirements for application scenarios are very high: the ambient temperature cannot be too low or too high; the battery is often afraid of discharge, always afraid of discharge; fast charging and fast discharge can not be used; a separate battery room is required to prevent acid mist from corroding others equipment. The battery takes up a lot of space and the floor is heavy. With the improvement of the power supply environment and the highly redundant design of the data center power supply system, UPS batteries rarely play a real discharge purpose. But it still requires service engineers to maintain and charge and discharge regularly to activate its performance. In order to understand the true performance of black box batteries, some customers are also equipped with online monitoring equipment to understand the status of each battery in real time. All these measures are to make the battery work at critical moments, but the price we pay for them seems too high. In the past 10 years, new energy storage batteries represented by lithium-ion battery packs have accounted for more than 90% of the market share in the consumer electronics field. With the rapid development of the electric vehicle industry, the cost of lithium-ion batteries has dropped by 70% compared to five years ago. On the other hand, the environmental storm that has swept across my country since 2016 has closed nearly 80% of the country's small and medium-sized lead-acid battery factories, and the price of lead-acid battery products has increased year by year. This trade-off has forced most lead-acid battery factories to switch to lithium-ion batteries, partly because the energy storage revolution has put fatal pressure on the entire lead-acid battery industry.
