About all solid state battery technology and application

2022-02-22

One of the problems: the cost is still high, the preparation process is complex, the technology is not mature

At present, the electrolyte of all-solid-state lithium battery mainly consists of organic and inorganic systems, which generally have a high cost. In particular, many batteries of inorganic system are prepared by complex processes such as CVD/PVD, which lead to slow production (deposition of thin films), high cost, and small capacity of single batteries, which are usually only suitable for small electronic devices.

(A typical solid-state battery, with a capacity of 1.0mAh, can power only small electronics.)

Moreover, the current maturity of all-solid-state battery preparation technology is generally general, and there are very few enterprises that can form large-scale production capacity. There are still many difficulties to be overcome for large-scale production expansion of technology, which is still in the period of promotion and development.

Problem two: fast charging is unrealistic

At present, all solid-state batteries have low rate performance, high internal resistance and high voltage drop when discharging at high rate. It is basically impossible to expect this kind of technology to solve the problem of fast charging in the near future.

At present, some products using all-solid-state batteries on the market are actually not working at room temperature. The most typical example is the more than 3,000 taxis using all-solid-state batteries in operation in France (the energy density of the battery cell can reach 260Wh/kg, which is better than the ordinary commercial lithium-ion batteries).

It cannot be commercialized on a large scale

As the electric car battery, a senior expert, fully battery consulting company President menachem haim ˙ Eric anderman said: "at present, electric cars using solid-state batteries are still in research stage, it is impossible to determine commercial schedule, because of the solid-state batteries are unlikely to choose all kinds of chemical materials used in the lithium ion battery, expects its price will be very high, and production difficulty is big."

And while Toyota says solid-state batteries take twice as long to charge as lithium-ion batteries, their performance is also highly affected by temperature. In other words, solid-state batteries are likely to be at slightly higher temperatures for real quick charging.

As a result, many industry insiders are also skeptical of Toyota's plans, saying it will be difficult for Toyota to mass produce solid-state battery packs.

All this seems to confirm Musk's claim that "solid-state battery technology is not on the road, it's still in development." But while it's unclear what will happen to the solid-state battery that Toyota is working on, if it can really get it going, it could revolutionize the electric-car battery industry, much as it did when Toyota launched the Prius and captured half of the hybrid car market.

Generally speaking, there is no doubt that all-solid-state battery is one of the mainstream directions of battery development recognized by battery scientific research and industry. However, there is still a long way to go for all-solid-state battery in terms of the conductivity of solid electrolyte, battery rate, battery preparation efficiency and cost control.
