LG Chem may supply NCMA batteries to Tesla next year

by:Vglory      2021-04-18
According to foreign media reports, industry sources revealed that LG EnergySolution, a battery company under LG Chem, will supply Tesla with nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum (NCMA) quaternary batteries next year. The company will also be the first battery supplier to process NCMA batteries for electric vehicles. Quotient. LGEnergySolution has stated that it will start processing this 90% nickel battery in the second half of 2021. But as to whether to supply this battery to Tesla, a company spokesperson said: “We cannot confirm this because we cannot disclose the names of customers.” Currently, the company is increasing the output of its Nanjing plant in my country. This factory processes cylindrical batteries for Tesla cars. According to previous reports, LG EnergySolution will supply NCMA batteries for Tesla's Model Y. The content of nickel in the cathode of the NCMA battery is 90%, and the content of cobalt is less than 5%. The high nickel content increases the energy density of the battery, allowing electric vehicles to last up to 600 kilometers on a single charge. The existing battery can only last 500 kilometers. LGEnergySolution has also reduced battery costs by reducing the use of cobalt materials and replacing cobalt with aluminum. As we all know, aluminum can help balance the instability of the cathode of high energy density batteries. LGEnergySolution cited a paper by Professor SunYang-kook of Hanyang University in South Korea. The article stated that NCMA batteries surpass Samsung NCA batteries and SK's NCM9 batteries in terms of capacity, battery life and resistance. The nickel content of the two is about 90%. LGEnergySolution will be supplied by Lu0026F, a local manufacturer of cathode materials for secondary batteries, and the two sides have signed an agreement of 1.45 trillion won. The head of Lu0026F is HuhJe-hong, great-grandson of LG Group co-founder HuhMan-jung. Earlier, LG Chem and GM announced that they would cooperate to process batteries by 2022. However, LG Chem's processing speed is faster than expected, coupled with the start of supply next year, which may accelerate its processing work with GM. LG and GM have established a joint venture company and plan to process Ultium batteries by 2022. The joint venture is called UltiumCells and will process NCMA batteries for electric vehicles at GM's Lordstown, Ohio plant. POSCO Chemical is supplying cathode materials to UltiumCells and is currently constructing a processing line in Gwangyang City, South Jeolla Province, South Korea.
