Lithium battery that can be used at minus 70 degrees Celsius Chinese scientists have announced a lithium battery that can work at minus 70 degrees Celsius, which can one day be used in the extreme cold environment of the earth and outer space. According to a study published in the latest issue of Joule, the American academic journal in the energy development of the new battery Xia Yonggyao team, Fudan University in my country uses ethyl acetate, low freezing point and conduction at extremely low temperatures, electrolytes and two organic compounds Electrode, PTPAn cathode and PNTCDA anode. Electrolyte is a chemical medium through which ions move between two electrodes, but the electrochemical reaction at the junction of the electrolyte and the electrodes is difficult to continue at low temperatures. The researchers said that unlike the electrodes used in traditional lithium batteries, the organic compounds used in the electrodes do not rely on the intercalation process, that is, lithium ions are not intercalated in the molecular matrix of the electrode, thereby preventing the process from slowing down under low temperature conditions. Ethyl acetate electrolyte and organic polymer electrodes enable rechargeable batteries to operate at temperatures as low as minus 70 degrees Celsius, Xia said. The performance of the traditional lithium battery at minus 20 degrees Celsius is 50% of the best level, and the performance at minus 40 degrees Celsius is 12% of the best level. The temperature in extremely cold regions such as Russia and Canada is below minus 50 degrees Celsius; in space, the temperature can be as low as minus 157 degrees Celsius. Xia Bin said that compared with the electrode data of traditional lithium batteries, this new type of battery is sufficient, cheap and environmentally friendly. He estimated that the cost of this battery is only about one-third of the traditional battery. But the researchers admit that the important challenge in making batteries into products is that their energy per unit mass is not as good as commercial lithium batteries, so they need to be optimized for processing. Nevertheless, Xia Bin believes that it still has obvious potential. Disclaimer: Some pictures and content of the articles published on this site are from the Internet.
