LG Chem will focus on investing in high-energy, low-cost long-axis batteries

Long-axis batteries can increase energy density while reducing costs and extending service life. It is reported that LGChem’s battery capital expenditures this year will reach 3 trillion won, deducting plant land and other important facilities, equipment investment is expected to be less than 1 trillion won. However, due to the installation of new assembly equipment to support the manufacture of long-axis batteries, this number may increase to more than 1 trillion won next year. Last year, LGChem invested in 300mm batteries and 600mm batteries at the same time. Next year, the company may even invest in 800mm batteries on the basis of 600mm shaft batteries. Investment in 800mm may be made in its plants in Poland and the United States, where the company has a joint venture with General Motors (GM). The report pointed out that LGChem has the ability to process long-axis batteries, thanks to its lamination process capability better than its competitors. In terms of extending battery life, the company's lamination process has more advantages than the Z stack process used by SKInnovation. Specifically, LGChem's technology allows cathodes and anodes to be stacked on a separator and then arranged through a lamination process, thereby reducing the possibility of the battery being unable to fold or fall off.
