How to choose a suitable UPS battery for the data center computer room?

For data center operators, there is no optimal battery technology. Each UPS battery has its own advantages and disadvantages, and operators should choose the most suitable UPS battery products according to their requirements. The UPS battery and the entire power supply system with it as the core are the core part to meet the power supply quality of the data center. If the power supply system causes voltage instability, instantaneous or long-term power supply interruption due to its own reasons or natural disasters, it will cause information system downtime . The storage battery is one of the most important components in the entire system, and it is the last barrier to ensure the stable operation of the entire power supply system. ⒈Lead-acid batteries Today, lead-acid batteries are still very popular because they have a proven record of reliability. For large-scale use, they are the most economical choice, with excellent performance and efficiency, low internal impedance, high tolerance to improper solutions, and high procurement costs. The electrolyte used in lead-acid batteries includes water and sulfuric acid, and a plate made of sponge lead (negative) and lead oxide (anode). The most important type of lead-acid battery is a valve-regulated lead-acid battery, also known as a sealed or maintenance-free battery. Valve-regulated lead-acid batteries are sealed, but there is a valve that can discharge the gas accumulated inside to the atmosphere. Generally, do not maintain it straight and do not add water, because the hydrogen released during the charging process will recombine with oxygen inside to form water. There are two types of valve-regulated lead-acid batteries on the market. The difference lies in the electrolyte mixture: the electrolyte of the glass microfiber separator battery is held in the highly porous microfiber glass separator; while the electrolyte gel of the gel battery is composed of sulfuric acid and two Composition of a mixture of silicon oxide. UPS batteries usually use AGM type sealed valve-regulated lead-acid batteries because they have lower internal resistance, higher specific power and efficiency, lower self-discharge rate and lower purchase cost. The glass microfiber separator battery has a faster charging speed and can supply a large current for a short time. The plate of a flooded lead-acid battery is immersed in an acid electrolyte. Since there is no seal, the hydrogen generated during operation will be directly discharged into the environment, and its ventilation system must be more powerful than sealed valve-regulated lead-acid batteries. In most cases, UPS battery packs are housed in dedicated rooms. Flooded lead-acid batteries must be kept upright, and the water level must be filled up manually. Compared with sealed valve-regulated lead-acid batteries, they have a longer service life and higher reliability. The battery room of lead-acid batteries must be kept at a reasonably constant temperature (20-25°C) to guard against shortening the service life and even causing damage. ⒉Lithium batteries In lithium batteries, the cathode is usually a metal oxide, and the anode is usually porous carbon graphite. Both are immersed in a liquid electrolyte made of lithium salt and organic solvent. In the data center environment, lithium batteries are becoming more and more attractive as an alternative to lead-acid batteries. Power availability is definitely the most important factor. The supply of lithium batteries is more reliable than lead-acid batteries. Not only is each individual battery safer and more stable, but each battery module has an electronic controller that can continue to check whether the battery has any signs of performance changes. The temperature, current, voltage, and charging status of each battery are monitored at the cabinet level, and the current battery status can be clearly known, and future operating time and performance can be predicted. Lithium batteries can be charged faster than lead-acid batteries, provide more discharge/recharge cycles than lead-acid batteries, and provide higher power density and efficiency, especially at high discharge rates. This eliminates overuse of the battery while reducing the space required for battery installation. Although the initial purchase price of lead-acid batteries is relatively low, the service life of lithium batteries is at least twice that of lead-acid batteries with the same specifications, thus reducing overall investment costs. It also reduces labor costs associated with battery removal and replacement. Lithium batteries generate less waste heat, which reduces cooling costs and reduces carbon footprint.
