Scientists have developed a new type of electrolyte that can solve the short-circuit ignition problem of lithium-ion batteries and increase the battery's service life. The researchers said that this discovery will be very friendly to the next generation of rechargeable batteries, such as lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-air batteries and lithium metal batteries. Currently, most rechargeable batteries on the market have used lithium-ion batteries. The anode is made of lithium or other materials, and the cathode is usually made of graphite. When the battery is connected, the flow of electrons between the two poles produces current. In order to control electrons, positively charged lithium ions move from one pole to the other through the electrolyte. However, the low energy storage capacity of graphite limits the capacity of lithium-ion batteries. In the 1970s, people developed rechargeable batteries based on lithium cathodes. The reason for choosing lithium is that the energy storage capacity of lithium is more than 10 times that of graphite. But the problem is that this will lead to the growth of dendrites at the microscopic level, which will eventually lead to short-circuit failure of the battery. This is a problem that has plagued the industry for many years. The new electrolyte developed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy can not only perfectly solve the dendritic problem, but also help lithium-ion batteries to achieve 99% efficiency and increase the energy density per unit area by more than 10 times. Zhang Jiguang, the physicist in charge of this research, said that the current widely used lithium-ion rechargeable battery capacity is close to the peak, so the design of the lithium-ion anode should be re-examined. Based on previous research, Zhang Jiguang and his colleagues decided to use imine containing a large amount of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) as the electrolyte of the new battery. In addition, they also added a substance called dimethoxyethane. The researchers made a circular test cell. New electrolytes and lithium anodes are used in batteries. The results show that the existence of the lithium anode only produces some smooth lithium nodes without a large number of fibrous dendrites. After 1000 charge-discharge cycles, the battery power is still 98.4% of the initial value, and the energy density remains at 4ma/cm~2. This new type of electrolyte is highly efficient and offers a new possibility. Today's cathodes are basically made of thin metal plates and active materials such as graphite or lithium coating. The reason why this kind of metal sheet is called a collector is because electrical appliances like our mobile phones get current through it. The reason why the active material needs to be coated on it is that so far, most electrolytes consume lithium ions during battery operation. However, an electrolyte with an efficiency of more than 99% means that it is possible to produce a cathode with only a negative current collector without an active material coating. This is expected to reduce the production cost and volume of the battery, and also improve the safety of the battery.
