Tesla fined $14 million in Germany for battery recycling violations

by:Vglory      2021-05-13
According to foreign media reports, Tesla was fined 12 million euros (approximately 14 million US dollars) in Germany because the company was suspected of violating a law that requires automakers selling electric vehicles to recycle batteries and use environmentally friendly Way to deal with it. In a document submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Tesla disclosed the fine from the German Federal Environmental Protection Agency. Tesla stated in this document that in accordance with the requirements of the automobile scrapping regulations, Tesla has continued to recycle battery packs, and this fine is importantly related to administrative requirements. Tesla wrote in the document: 'The German Federal Environmental Protection Agency (UBA) issued a 12 million euro fine to our subsidiary in Germany, stating that we had failed to comply with relevant market laws and failed to comply with the provisions of the law. Fulfill the obligation to recycle scrap battery products. This fine is importantly related to administrative requirements, but Tesla continues to recycle battery packs. Although we cannot predict the outcome of this matter, including the final amount of any penalties, we have already dealt with it. An objection was submitted, and it is expected that the fine will not have a significant adverse impact on our business. 'At present, most Teslas on the road have not yet expired the warranty period, so Tesla does not have many recyclable batteries. When replacing the battery, Tesla usually 'remanufactures' the end-of-life batteries so that they can continue to be used in future battery replacements. Tesla is currently building its first plant in Europe on the outskirts of Berlin, and the company plans to put the plant into operation in July next year. Last month, after Tesla was forced to interrupt construction due to non-payment of water bills, EvanHoretsky, an executive responsible for overseeing the construction of its German plant, announced his departure.
