According to foreign media reports, LG Chem (LGChem) has completed the development of its ModulePackIntegratedPlatform (MPI). The company hopes to use the new platform to integrate the cells directly into the battery pack instead of being built into the module first. (Image source: electrive) LGChem has not officially launched the MPI platform, but as the development is completed, sales may start soon. According to analysis, the number of cells that this new platform can hold is twice that of the traditional module platform, while its cost will be reduced by 30%, and the energy density will be increased by 10%. Modularization will affect the value chain of installing batteries into automobiles, and the related installation process must also be changed: either LGChem will only supply batteries in the future, and these batteries must be built-in components different from modules; or LGChem will directly supply off-the-shelf components Installation package instead of pre-integrated modules. In addition, it is necessary to consider updating the design of the battery pack itself. For example, the overall stability is fully supplied by the housing, and the design and installation of the thermal management system will also be affected by the battery-less module. For many years, Tesla has been adhering to this battery concept, even though they use cylindrical batteries. Recently, Chinese companies have also introduced module-free battery technology. For example, CATL uses cell-to-battery technology (CTP), while BYD uses blade batteries. At the same time, LG Chem is also simplifying its battery supply to simplify processing lines and improve efficiency. The company will supply two kinds of batteries, the standard battery is 300mm, and the long version is 500mm, replacing the previous soft-packed batteries tailored to OEM requirements. For a long time, personalized size has been regarded as the advantage of soft-pack batteries. However, this requires constant adjustment of processing methods. Re-adjusting a processing line accurately reduces the scrap rate to a very low level, which may take up to a month. This process is expensive and inefficient. As automakers demand lower prices, they must reduce costs through standardized processing. According to reports, Audi, Daimler and Renault will use batteries with a length of 300 to 400mm. Take Volkswagen’s MEB platform as an example. Its cell length is 550mm. Hyundai and its E-GMP platform are also expected to be equipped with long cells.
