How to improve the existing battery recycling process?

by:Vglory      2021-04-11
Fei Weiyang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: The recycling technology of retired lithium batteries needs to be improved urgently. Lithium batteries are the core components of new energy vehicles. Retired batteries are an important part of the entire life cycle of power lithium-ion batteries. However, they are widely recycled in our country. Fan Dong, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor at Tsinghua University, shared his thoughts on strengthening research and development of advanced lithium battery recycling technology decision-making consultation salon on lithium battery recycling sponsored by the Beijing Science and Technology Association Literature and Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. We must cherish scarce resources. Lithium products are widely used in nuclear industry, batteries, glass ceramics, aerospace and other industries. In recent years, the demand for power lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles has surpassed traditional fields such as glass and ceramics, and has become an important rising point for electric vehicles. Although my country's lithium resources are very rich, they also have certain limitations. For example, the total amount of lithium resources in Qinghai Salt Lake is very large, but the concentration of lithium in the brine is very low, and the ratio of magnesium to lithium is very high. It is very difficult to extract lithium from the brine of the salt lake. After years of hard work, my country has made certain progress in the membrane method, adsorption method, roasting leaching method, extraction method and other technologies for extracting lithium from salt lake brine. Some companies use these technologies to process thousands of tons of lithium products every year, but the process equipment needs to be improved, the product quality needs to be improved, and the environmental protection work needs to be strengthened urgently. Lithium battery-grade products currently used in China are also heavily dependent on imported resources. Over time, the number of retired lithium batteries processed in my country will soon reach tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of tons per year. Processing without recycling is unsustainable and poses a further threat to the natural environment. Fivean pointed out that the cathode material of lithium batteries contains precious metals such as lithium, nickel and cobalt. These scarce resources must be cherished and recycled. Green development faces severe challenges. Lithium batteries have complex structures, including casings, separators, positive electrodes, negative electrodes, copper liquids, graphite, and aluminum liquids. At present, the generally favored lithium battery treatment process in the industry is wet treatment, which requires the use of mechanical methods to decompose the battery casing, leaching to dissolve valuable metal elements, and then precipitation and extraction to recover the metal. Feifan said: The wet process has a high element recovery rate and relatively mild operating conditions, but it must also use a lot of chemical substances, and it must be done in an environmentally friendly way. However, at present, the recycling of lithium batteries in my country is mainly carried out by small companies or even hand-crafted workshops. The technical means are simple and primitive, and the effective recovery rate of resources is extremely low, causing serious harm to the environment. Battery recycling is very extensive. Mr. Feifan made no secret of this. Regarding the future development trend of lithium battery recycling technology, fiviyan suggested that the first step is to realize the automatic, safe and efficient dismantling and efficient recycling of valuable metals. More importantly, the secondary pollution in the recycling process should be controlled to prevent threats to the environment and health. It is necessary to combine cleverly, promote coordinated development, and truly prepare for retirement battery recycling. It requires interdisciplinary research on machinery manufacturing, metallurgy, chemical engineering, and chemical engineering. Cooperation in process, equipment, control, management and other aspects should be carried out by a large factory. Processing, learning and research, politics, collaborative innovation, research and development of corresponding advanced dismantling and extraction processes for different types of batteries, and establishing a scientific recycling system. Indicates fivean. The real economic benefits of technological innovation do not come from flashy ideas, but from the ingenious combination of emerging technologies that are maturing and traditional technologies that have existed for decades. Recycling of decommissioned batteries seems to be a low-end traditional technology, but industrial development and environmental protection urgently require us to adopt advanced and mature machinery manufacturing, hydrometallurgy, etc. Statement: Some pictures and content of articles published on this site are from the Internet, if any Infringement, please contact to delete the previous article: How to alleviate the cost and mileage anxiety of lithium battery manufacturing?
