Will low-temperature discharge of lithium battery pack accelerate aging?
by:Vglory 2021-03-28
The low temperature environment will reduce the activity of the lithium battery pack, which is temporary and will not damage the battery capacity. However, if the battery is operated and charged and discharged in a low temperature environment for a long time, it will permanently damage the battery capacity. An exact and unacceptable hazard of lithium battery pack charging at low temperature is lithium elemental deposition, impaired cycle life and increased risk of thermal runaway. But for low-temperature discharge, apart from the temporary decrease of the discharge capacity (after the temperature rises, it is believed that this part of the capacity will rise again), there is no other clear hazard. Temperature has a great influence on the cycle aging rate of lithium battery packs. Lower temperature reduces cycle life due to enhanced lithium elemental electroplating; excessively high temperature shortens battery life due to the aging reaction driven by Arrhenius; therefore, the best cycle life of lithium battery packs can only be obtained at an appropriate temperature. However, if the battery is operated and charged and discharged in a low temperature environment for a long time, metallic lithium will precipitate on the surface of the battery anode. This process is irreversible and will permanently damage the capacity of the lithium battery pack. Disclaimer: Some pictures and content of articles published on this site are from the Internet.
