Why the battery loses water

In actual maintenance, it was found that most of the current reasons for the decrease in battery capacity are due to the loss of water in the battery. Once the UPS battery loses water, it will cause the positive and negative plates of the UPS battery to separate from the diaphragm or insufficient acid supply, causing the battery to fail to discharge electricity. Although the battery adopts oxygen circulation technology to minimize the loss of electrolyte moisture, the following reasons cause moisture loss (water loss) to be unavoidable: ●Incomplete gas recombination. The standard stipulates that the gas recombination efficiency should be greater than 95%. Generally, the recombination efficiency can reach 97%-98% under normal conditions, which means that 2%-3% of oxygen will always be precipitated from the UPS battery. This part of oxygen comes from the electrolysis of water. Although its amount is small, it can accumulate for a long time to be considerable. If too much acid is injected into the battery, the gas recombination efficiency will be further reduced. ●The battery is not well sealed or the safety valve opening pressure is set too low, which is an important reason for the escape of oxygen during battery charging. Especially during equalizing charging or supplementary charging, as the charging voltage increases, the amount of oxygen evolution will increase, which will increase the internal pressure of the battery, and part of the oxygen will escape from the safety valve before it can recombine. For this reason, the opening pressure of the safety valve should be increased as much as possible if the strength of the battery shell permits. ●Whether the selection of float voltage is appropriate has a great impact on battery life. When the float charge voltage is high or the battery temperature rises, if the float charge voltage is not lowered in time, the float charge voltage of the UPS battery will be too high and the overcharge current will be too high, which will reduce the oxygen recombination reaction efficiency and cause water loss. Will accelerate the battery loss process. ●The result of the corrosion of the positive grid is that the lead of the positive grid is converted into lead dioxide. The oxygen required comes from the water in the electrolyte, so a certain amount of water is consumed. Sometimes due to the failure of the safety valve, a large amount of hydrogen and oxygen will be discharged from the battery, resulting in the loss of electrolyte moisture. ●The UPS battery shell uses materials with poor water vapor and oxygen retention performance, which will also accelerate the rate of water loss of the UPS battery. ●In order to increase the capacity of UPS battery, the new electrode plate and the new positive electrode plate active material consumption, the negative transition is insufficient, the oxygen cycle decreases, and the oxygen from the positive plate is too late to be absorbed by the negative plate during the charging process, and water loss occurs. ●The valve opening pressure of the UPS battery is low, which is easy to exhaust. At the same time, the oxygen pressure inside the battery is low, which reduces the oxygen circulation capacity and increases the amount of gassing. ●The storage battery after loss of water is equivalent to increasing the concentration of sulfuric acid. As the sulfuric acid concentration of UPS batteries has increased, sulfation is relatively serious. The sulfation of batteries with high sulfuric acid concentration is obvious, which further reduces the ability of the negative plate to circulate oxygen. Therefore, the sulfation of the battery aggravates the loss of water, and the loss of water aggravates the sulfation.
