What role does graphene play in lithium battery materials

by:Vglory      2021-03-27
Graphene has the potential to replace graphite as a new generation of negative electrode material for lithium batteries due to its magical two-dimensional structure, excellent electron transport capability, and large specific surface area. The lithium storage mechanism of graphene is similar to that of other carbon materials. When charging, lithium ions are extracted from the positive electrode and intercalated in the electrolyte to form Li2C6. When discharging, lithium ions are removed and returned to the positive electrode. ●The primary purpose of graphene as a conductive agent is to improve electronic conductivity. Since the electrolyte is ionically conductive but electrons cannot be conducted, the conductive agent promotes electrons to quickly pass through the active material to the current collector. In addition, the conductive agent can also improve the productivity of the pole pieces, promote the infiltration of the pole pieces by the electrolyte, and reduce the resistivity, thereby increasing the service life of the lithium battery. ● Cathode material For lithium batteries, the usable cathode material should meet the characteristics of large reversible capacity, high and stable potential, non-toxicity, and low production cost. At present, the more common cathode materials for lithium batteries are mostly lithium iron phosphate materials, but LiFePO4 has poor conductivity and low lithium ion mobility. If LiFePO4 material is compounded with graphene, theoretically, its conductivity can be improved and the rate performance can be improved.
