What is the difference between all solid-state batteries and liquid lithium-ion batteries?

In the latest issue of NatureEnergy, Samsung Advanced Research Institute and Samsung Japan Research Institute jointly published the latest developments in solid-state batteries. Researchers have found a way to increase the life of all-solid-state batteries and at the same time improve the safety of all-solid-state batteries, which is in line with the development trend of new energy vehicles with long battery life and high performance. What is an all-solid-state battery? The two ends of a traditional lithium-ion battery are the positive and negative poles of the battery, and the middle is the electrolyte (liquid). During the movement of lithium ions from the positive electrode to the negative electrode and then to the positive electrode, the charging and discharging process of the battery is completed. All-solid-state batteries, as the name suggests, are batteries that use solid electrodes and solid electrolytes. All-solid-state batteries have low power density and high energy density, making them ideal batteries for electric vehicles. Moreover, the flexibility of the all-solid-state battery will be clearly improved after being thinner and lighter. What is Samsung’s latest research progress? Samsung’s solution is to use a silver-carbon (Ag-C) nano-composite anode layer. The thickness of the silver-carbon compound layer is only 5 microns, but the battery energy density is increased to 900Wh/L, and the volume is reduced in general. This means that an electric car with an all-solid-state battery and a gasoline car, under the same cruising range, the volume and weight of an electric car are only half of the latter. The scientific community generally believes that lithium batteries have reached the limit, and countries around the world are also actively studying all-solid-state batteries. In 2010, Toyota introduced a solid-state battery with a cruising range of more than 1000KM. In March 2015, Dyson of the United Kingdom invested US$15 million in solid-state battery company Sakti3. Dongmin Im, head of the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology) next-generation battery laboratory, said: We will continue to develop and improve all-solid-state battery materials and manufacturing technologies to help electric vehicle battery innovation reach a new level. Obviously, the all-solid-state battery is still a laboratory battery, and it may take some time before the final mass production. Just like liquid lithium-ion batteries, in the 1970s, related concepts and test certifications were advancing at the same time, but the real large-scale use was already at the end of the 20th century.
