What are the performance requirements of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles?

Lithium iron phosphate has high safety factor and low energy density. There are generally two systems for dynamic lithium battery anode materials: (1) Phosphoric acid series, including lithium iron phosphate, lithium manganese phosphate, lithium vanadium phosphate, etc., and are used in lithium manganese phosphate and cobalt iron phosphate. (2) Lithium manganese oxide and other manganese-containing materials (such as NCM) and manganese-free nickel cobalt lithium aluminate (NCA) and other materials developed on this basis. There is no unified name for the system. For ease of description, lithium iron phosphate and the most used ternary material represent these two systems respectively. The performance requirements of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles are mainly reflected in safety and energy density. Safety, needless to say, is the first choice for any vehicle; in addition, the vehicle space is limited and the mileage is limited, so the energy density of the power lithium-ion battery is also very important. There are many factors that affect the performance of lithium batteries, and the cathode material is an important factor that plays a leading role. Therefore, before developing dynamic lithium battery technology, companies in different countries and regions should first consider which system of anode materials to choose. Generally speaking, the advantages of lithium iron phosphate are high safety factor and long cycle life, but the disadvantage is low energy density. Ternary materials are just the opposite. Most Japanese and Korean companies choose the ternary material route, focusing on the safety and cycle life of the ternary material; Chinese (including Taiwan) and American companies usually choose the lithium iron phosphate route, focusing on improving energy density. It should be pointed out that, perhaps for safety reasons, Chinese government departments and officials have either explicitly or implicitly encouraged companies to take the lithium iron phosphate route.
