What are the performance characteristics of solar lithium batteries

by:Vglory      2021-05-05
Both lithium batteries and lead batteries lose useful energy capacity in cold weather conditions. However, with regard to lead batteries, the effect is much more serious. At a temperature of -20C, the useful energy of a lead battery is reduced to 30%, as shown in the figure below. Under the same discharge conditions, the lithium battery retains 82% of its energy capacity. Lithium batteries will not only last longer in high-temperature countries, but also in very cold mountainous areas. Turnover efficiency Turnover cycle efficiency shows the efficiency of the battery in a complete charge and discharge cycle. Regarding batteries, this is usually about 75%. This means that if you charge a 1000Wh battery, you can only get 750Wh of electricity to actually power your device. Therefore, the battery alone will lose 25% of the system efficiency! In the case of solar street lights (or any other solar system), this means you need at least 25% more solar panels to power the same load. Under these conditions, the system will become unpreparedly more expensive (or perform worse under the same configuration). However, with regard to lithium batteries, the turnover cycle efficiency is about 98%. No wonder we see an increase in the use of this battery technology. The depth of discharge tolerance and the depth of discharge of the discharge cycle are related to the depth of battery power consumption in each cycle. The deeper the battery is discharged, the fewer the discharge cycles, and therefore the shorter the battery's service life. Lithium batteries can be easily discharged to 95%, while lead batteries can be limited to less than 50%. The figure below shows how the depth of discharge is related to the number of cycles of lead and lithium batteries. If we want to use the battery for about 2000 cycles (2000/365 days u003d 5, 5 years), you can only discharge lead batteries by 25-35%, while lithium batteries can only discharge about 80%. This means that you need at least 4 times the capacity of a lithium battery to get the same battery life as a lead battery! Or in other words: if you want to use 80% of the battery capacity, you can only use 250-500 cycles of lead batteries instead of 2000 cycles of lithium batteries. The battery has to be replaced 4-8 times than the lithium battery! The complexity of lithium batteries After reading all of this, you may wonder why someone would choose batteries. The answer is simple. Lead batteries are easier to perform than lithium batteries. Lithium batteries are more sensitive to overcharge (above the maximum allowable voltage) and discharge (below the minimum allowable voltage), which requires more advanced electronic equipment. At FlexSol, we have the knowledge and skills to solve this complexity. This is why all our products are equipped with a dedicated battery management system that can optimize charging and discharging, thereby maximizing battery life.
