What are the basic charging methods for aeromodelling lithium batteries

by:Vglory      2021-05-04
Most dedicated aeromodelling lithium battery charging integrated circuits charge the battery in this way. There are three charging methods for aeromodelling lithium batteries: pre-charging, fast charging, constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV). When the battery cell voltage is 3.0V or lower in the precharging step, the battery is charged at a low speed. This restores the passivation layer, which can be completely discharged during long-term storage. It can also prevent overheating of the 1C charging rate when a partial copper breakdown occurs on the battery anode that is short-circuited by excessive discharge. 1. When the voltage of the lithium battery reaches 3.0V, the charger enters the CC step and the fast charging current is usually limited to a speed of 0.5C to 1C to prevent overheating and thus deterioration. When the model airplane lithium battery is fully charged, the charger starts to control the battery voltage, and when entering the CV level, the charging current drops sharply to a predetermined end level. To prevent charging dead batteries for a long time, a fast charging safety timer is usually required. Even if the battery does not reach the shutdown current, the battery charger must be turned off after the safe time is over. 2. The battery capacity is a function of the battery voltage. Generally, the higher the voltage of the RC lithium battery, the larger the battery capacity. However, the higher the battery charging voltage, the shorter the battery life. When the battery voltage is high, the battery cathode material reacts faster with the electrolyte, and the cobalt material is permanently lost during the chemical reaction. Therefore, the available energy storage materials are reduced, resulting in a loss of the battery's chemical capacity. Therefore, the accuracy of the battery charging voltage is very important. 3. Time is an important factor for battery charging. In the constant current state, 70% of the total capacity of the rechargeable battery requires about 30% of the charging time, while in the constant voltage state, the charging time only accounts for about 70% of the charging time. This is because of the resistance inside the battery. The lower the internal resistance of the battery, the shorter the battery charging time. 4. The charging current must not exceed the maximum charging current specified in the specification. Charging with a current higher than the recommended current may cause problems with the battery's charging and discharging performance, mechanical performance and safety performance, and may lead to heat generation or leakage. It is recommended not to use 5C charging frequently for the 5C current rechargeable lithium batteries currently on the market, so as not to affect the battery life. 5. Charging voltage: The charging voltage shall not exceed the specified limit voltage (4.2V/single battery), 4.25V is the highest limit of the charging voltage for each cell. 6. Charging temperature: The lithium battery must be charged within the ambient temperature range specified in the product specification, otherwise the battery is easily damaged. When the surface temperature of the battery is found to be abnormal, the charging should be stopped immediately.
