When lithium batteries dominate the field of stationary energy storage, more and more industrial companies are actively developing different technologies to enhance their competitiveness and bring more competitive energy storage systems to the market. Among the competitors of lithium batteries, Redox Flow Battery (Redox Flow Battery) is currently one of the important competitors entering the market. Recently, IDTechEx conducted an in-depth analysis of redox sulphur batteries from a technical and market perspective, and assessed their potential to cope with the ever-evolving stationary energy storage market. Obviously, lithium batteries will occupy a dominant position in the near future. At present, lithium batteries have shown their power in occupying the energy storage market, which has pushed the energy storage industry to a new chapter. Lithium batteries have the advantages of large size and high energy density, which makes this technology very suitable for solving the electric vehicle market. Driven by the decline in the cost of the electric vehicle market, the technology has also become competitive in the fixed energy storage market, power supply side (FTM) and demand side (BTM) applications. These characteristics make lithium batteries extremely competitive. Although there are other energy storage technologies on the market, the advantages of lithium batteries are still difficult to challenge. Although lithium batteries have great advantages in the energy storage market, the hazardous materials used in lithium batteries can easily catch fire if they are not handled carefully. In addition, these systems are difficult to extinguish once they are ignited. PSA Group cooperated with the fire department to design a special solution that can inject water into the battery stack and extinguish the fire easily in the event of an ignition. In addition to the risk of fire, for stationary energy storage applications, lithium batteries have a shorter cycle life (about 10,000 cycles) than other equipment. For example, redox sulphur batteries can supply more than 20,000 cycles. Therefore, despite the lower energy density, the redox sulphur battery has a longer cycle life and safer chemical composition, making this technology very suitable for stationary applications. Unlike lithium batteries, the working principle of redox fluid batteries is to flow two liquids on the electrodes, namely electrolytes. In this way, the electroactive material contained in the electrolyte reacts on the surface of the electrode to generate electricity. Therefore, the greater the amount of electrolyte, the greater the energy stored in the battery. The power output of a redox sulfur battery is defined by the size of the electrode stack and the kinetics of the chemical reaction. Therefore, another advantage of redox sulphur batteries is the decoupling of energy and power, which makes the customization of this system easier.
