Can used batteries be recycled?

by:Vglory      2021-05-08
Regarding the recycling of dry batteries, the battery industry has always had two opinions. One group believes that centralized recycling of disposable batteries is of little significance. Without conditions, centralized recycling will cause centralized pollution. Some experts believe that the most important components of dry batteries that are currently recycled are iron, zinc, manganese, and trace amounts of mercury. The mercury content of this battery is not high, and there is no need for centralized recycling. Lead-acid batteries and nickel-cadmium batteries that are very harmful to human health should be recycled. The mercury content in high-mercury batteries is only one-thousandth of the total amount of batteries. After the waste is buried, the amount of heavy metals in the batteries entering the landfill is very small and does not constitute pollution. The cost of recycling and disposing of used batteries is too high, making it unprofitable from an economic point of view, not to mention that secondary pollution may occur during the recycling process. According to the relevant person in charge of the my country Battery Association, my country's disposable dry batteries have basically achieved low mercury and are moving towards mercury-free. Dispersed disposal of garbage will not pose a threat to the environment. What should be done more is to eliminate pollution from the production leader, that is, to achieve mercury-free. Due to the high cost of recycling disposable batteries, it is difficult to do without economic leverage to stimulate companies to recycle disposable batteries. The rechargeable batteries and lead-acid batteries that pollute the environment are to be recycled. Some experts also cited as examples that some developed countries do not concentrate on recycling disposable batteries. Another view is that no matter what type of battery, it must be recycled. Experts of this view believe that the vast majority of civilians in my country are disposable batteries, and the mercury-free process of batteries is not optimistic. Among the more than 1,000 battery production companies in China, only more than 300 are registered with the my country Battery Association. Although the batteries produced by large battery companies are currently low or mercury-free, a large number of small companies still have high mercury. Zhang Hu, a senior engineer at the Dry Battery Inspection Station of Hebei Province, said that at present, the mercury content of batteries in my country is uneven, some of which are of very good quality, less than one part per million; 10,000 times higher than the mercury-free battery standard. It is also understood that less than 15% of large battery manufacturers can mass produce low mercury and no mercury in my country. Not long ago, a survey of batteries by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce showed that 20% of the batteries on the Chinese market were not up to standard. Therefore, it is not in line with the national conditions to use the relevant experience of the developed countries that have realized the mercury-free battery not to recycle the disposable batteries to match the reality of our country. Relevant experts believe that not only mercury in batteries will cause pollution, but zinc, manganese, cadmium, lead, etc. will rot into the ground with domestic waste. If a certain limit is exceeded, it will also cause pollution. These harmful substances enter the human body along the food chain and greatly threaten human health.
