Analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of solid-state batteries

Analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of solid-state batteries Advantages: 1. High safety performance. Safety is the most important thing, and solid-state batteries have a great advantage on this alone. So why are solid-state batteries safe? Because when the liquid electrolyte is short-circuited, the temperature rises, igniting the electrolyte and exploding. However, the solid electrolyte is non-flammable, non-corrosive, non-volatile, and has no liquid leakage problems. 2. High energy density. The high energy density is mainly because the solid electrolyte generally has a wider electrochemical window, just like a small frame, so more high-voltage cathode materials can be installed. Coupled with the small size and stability of solid-state batteries, battery management can be simplified, and the energy density will naturally be greatly improved. 3. Relatively light. In traditional lithium-ion batteries, the separator and electrolyte together account for nearly 40% of the battery's volume and 25% of the mass, and the use of solid electrolytes can naturally reduce the volume and mass. 4. Strong cycle performance. The solid electrolyte solves the problem of the solid electrolyte interface film formed during the charging and discharging process of the liquid electrolyte and the lithium dendritic phenomenon, which greatly improves the cycle performance and service life of the lithium battery. Disadvantages: 1. The interface impedance is too large. The interface between the solid electrolyte and the electrode material is in a solid-solid state, so the effective contact between the electrode and the electrolyte is weak, and the ion transport kinetics in the solid substance is low. 2. Fast charging is more difficult. The battery’s impedance, conductivity and other problems are manifested in that the internal resistance is large, which will hinder charging, and because of the large internal resistance, energy loss will occur during the charging process. This part of energy waste is a problem that cannot be ignored. 3. The cost price is high. Cost is the biggest factor preventing commercialization. Without profit, there is naturally no market. The solid-state battery preparation process is not mature enough, and the battery usage data collection is not comprehensive. Only in the electrolyte manufacturing of all-solid-state batteries, the two core issues of solid-solid interface optimization are technically immature enough to keep the cost of solid-state batteries high.
