Analysis of important differences between magnesium batteries and lithium batteries

Lithium batteries are a type of batteries that use lithium metal or lithium alloy as the negative electrode material and use a non-aqueous electrolyte solution. In 1912, the lithium metal battery was first proposed and studied by Gilbert N. Lewis. In the 1970s, M.S. Whittingham proposed and began to study lithium batteries. Due to the very active chemical properties of lithium metal, the production, storage and use of lithium metal have very high environmental requirements. Lithium batteries can be roughly divided into two categories: lithium metal batteries and lithium batteries. Lithium batteries do not contain metallic lithium and are rechargeable. Magnesium battery Magnesium battery is a primary battery with magnesium as the negative electrode and certain metal or non-metal oxides as the positive electrode. Among the existing varieties, there are magnesium-manganese dry batteries that can be discharged at any time similar to ordinary zinc-manganese dry batteries; there are also reserve batteries that can be stored for a long time in a dry state and activated by adding water before use. The structure of the magnesium manganese dioxide dry battery is similar to that of the cardboard zinc-manganese battery. The composition and ratio of the positive manganese dioxide carbon package are basically the same, and the negative electrode is a magnesium cylinder. Magnesium batteries have very high energy, and the unit of energy density reaches 800 watt-hours/kg. 1 kg of this new type of battery is equivalent to 30 times that of lead-acid batteries used in automobiles. The storage life of the magnesium storage battery can reach more than 10 years. It can be activated by adding clean water or sea water during temporary use on any occasion, and it can be used within half an hour after activation. The working voltage is very stable, and the service life is generally 0.5-24 hours. Lithium batteries can only be out of reach. Compared with lithium, magnesium has many advantages. For example, the melting point of lithium is about 180 degrees Celsius, while the melting point of magnesium is as high as about 650 degrees Celsius, so it is safer and the reserves of magnesium are much more abundant than lithium. However, the development of magnesium batteries also faces some technical difficulties. For example, no suitable cathode material has been found before, and there is also a lack of help to stabilize charging and discharging.
