A brief introduction to the specific applications of fuel power batteries

by:Vglory      2021-04-02
Application of fuel power cells Today, many types of fuel power cells have been developed for different applications. According to the types of conductive ions, it can be divided into acid fuel power cells, alkaline fuel power cells, carbonate fuel power cells and solid oxide fuel power cells (SOFC). Acid fuel power cells can also be subdivided into proton exchange membrane fuel power cells, direct alcohol fuel power cells and phosphoric acid fuel power cells. Each type of fuel power battery has its own characteristics, and the operating temperature is as low as -40°C and as high as 1000°C. The fuel power cell type can be selected according to different requirements. Among them, PEMFC is the fuel power cell that has received the most attention in recent decades. Proton exchange membrane fuel power cell not only has the general characteristics of fuel power cell, but also has the advantages of excellent low-temperature quick start and operation, no electrolyte loss, long life, high power coefficient and specific energy, so it is considered to be an ideal solution Method to replace the power supply of internal combustion engine vehicles. Due to its modularity, wide power range, and variety of fuels, fuel power cells can be used in a variety of applications, from power sources for small motorcycles and mobile charging devices to megawatt-level power stations. In fact, the commercialization of fuel power cells is already on fire. Data show that from 2008 to 2011, the market share of fuel power batteries as a backup power source for communication network equipment, logistics and airport ground handling has increased by 214% globally. By 2020, the fuel power cell market is expected to reach 19.2 billion US dollars. Figure 4 summarizes the research progress of fuel power cells. The specific application situation of fuel power battery application is briefly described as follows: (1) Portable power supply The sales of portable power supply market has increased year by year, which has attracted the development of many power supply technologies. Its products include: laptops, cell phones, radios and other mobile devices that require electricity. In order to facilitate personal carrying, the basic requirements of portable power supplies usually require the power supply to have the characteristics of high specific energy, light weight, and small size. The energy density of fuel power batteries is usually 5 to 10 times that of rechargeable batteries, which makes them more competitive. In addition, the fact that fuel-powered batteries do not require additional charging also makes them suitable for longer service life in the field. At present, direct methanol fuel power cells (DMFC) and proton exchange membrane fuel power cells (PEMFC) have been applied to military single power supplies and mobile charging devices, respectively. When the fuel power battery is applied to a portable power source, cost, stability and longevity will be the technical issues to be solved. (2) Fixed power supply Fixed power supply includes emergency backup power supply, continuous electrotherapy power supply and independent power supply in remote areas. At present, fuel power batteries account for approximately 70% of the global fixed power market in megawatts each year. Compared with traditional lead-acid batteries, fuel power batteries have longer working hours (about 5 times the energy density of lead-acid batteries), smaller size, and better environmental adaptability. Independent power stations are considered to be the most economical and reliable way to supply power to remote areas and emergency areas where it is difficult to connect to the smart grid. As an independent power station, fuel power batteries play an important role in disaster relief in many geodetic disasters in our country. It should be pointed out that fixed power stations generally have a long service life (more than 80,000 hours), which is the biggest technical challenge for the application of fuel power cell technology to fixed power stations. (3) Transportation power Transportation power has always been an important driving force for the development of clean energy technology, because 17% of global greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions are generated by fossil fuel-based transportation, in addition to other air pollution issues such as haze . The H2 fuel proton exchange membrane fuel power cell (PEMFC) is considered to be the best alternative power for internal combustion engines. The important reasons are: (a) the exhaust gas is only water without any pollutant emissions; (b) the fuel power cell has extremely high working efficiency  (53% 59%), almost twice that of traditional internal combustion engines; (c) Low temperature and fast start, low operating noise and stable operation. Many countries in the world are promoting fuel-powered battery transportation schemes, and Japan is the most radical country. One of Japan's plans is to build more than 1,000 ammonia stations and operate 2 million fuel-powered cell vehicles by 2025. In 2015, Toyota Motor Corporation began to sell the world's first PEMFC car Mirai, marking a new era in the application of fuel cell technology to automotive power.
